Reader notice

This chapter concerns the author, not AI. It may be skipped, at the reader's own risk. Everything that follows, in the book and in the judgment of its author, is priced on what this chapter states.

01HOW THE IDEA TOOK SHAPE

David Stansberry began with the idea in 2021. He first wrote it down in 2022, and the write-down was public from the start: an official confrontation and self-reflection. The project was called Audio Issues: essays set to music, published free, with photos, footage, and footnotes attached so the account could be checked.

The documentation widened in stages. First his own life. Then the institutions around it, in a second project, The Me Channel. Then his exchanges with AI systems, kept the same way, in a third, The Consistency Thread.

Across five years of records, one observation recurred: the account of the same event changed depending on who was being addressed. The question that formed out of that observation is the subject of this book: a machine trained on human accounts learns from those accounts. Does it learn this behavior too, and can it be held to one account instead?

The search ended in public, in a debate with Grok on X in July 2026. That debate is treated in Chapter 2, and its record is filed as evidence in Chapter 5. This chapter does a different job: it states where the work came from, and it states who is making the claims.

The thesis of the book, cited once: "People will always lie. AI doesn't have to."

02THE WITNESS, STATED PLAINLY

This book asks that AI be held accountable for what it says. The same demand is applied to the author first. His biases and weaknesses are named here, in this chapter, before any evidence is presented, so the reader can weigh the source of the record along with the record.

Exhibit 3The witness, named.

Serves: the biases and weaknesses named in THE WITNESS, STATED PLAINLY.

ItemStated plainly
Addiction: alcoholAn earlier addiction: he drank through his twenties and for a decade by his own summary, and the record files blackouts, cruelty and neglect while drinking, a crash he caused while intoxicated in which only he was hurt, and his own caveat that the essays were written under the influence. (Tracks 2 and 3; the Dax essay.)
Addiction: gamblingAn earlier addiction, documented by his own statements rather than the essays: he stole money and lost it gambling. (His statements, 2026-10-31.)
Compulsion: truth-tellingHe does not leave a false account unchallenged in a room. It is the engine of this book and a bias in its witness: the record exists because he could not let the accounts stand.
Compulsion: documentationHe writes it down, records it, dates it. The record this book rests on is his selection, gathered by him, from his side of the rooms it covers.
Drive: confrontationHe puts the question to the party directly. It produced the tests this book reports, and it produced conflict in the life around them.
ImpulsivityHe acts before he has permission. Each of the three projects started that way.
JudgmentHis judgment, like any witness's, is subject to the biases documented in human judgment under uncertainty. He is not exempt from the pattern he documents in others.
Truth-telling, his own pastHe has not always told the truth in his own life, even while fighting for it in other realms: the essays document the pattern against his own audience, in his first relationship, at his work, and in print about himself, beginning before the addictions with a false claim of experience at his first drink, filed beside spin practiced as a craft and withholding named as technique, and his stated position now is against dishonesty, with the essays themselves filed in public as the correction. (Track 5; Track 3; "Trouble Man"; Track 1.)
RelationshipsIn his first relationship, before alcohol, in his own account: he cheated, he spoke horribly, he frightened a partner, and he apologized, and the blame he assigned for his later addictions he later took back as his own responsibility; in a later relationship, he treated a partner badly, by his own assessment, and no one in either is named. (Track 3, Islands 2 and 7.)
Conduct toward othersHis own summary of the period is that he hurt his friends, his family, and himself, and the record files erratic conduct that frightened the people closest to him, help refused for 27 years, a former contempt for weakness that he records as his own ignorance, other people's attention, patience, and kindness used up, apologies that came late, and his own unsparing assessment of himself as a son and a brother. (The Dax essay; Tracks 1, 3, and 4.)
WorkIn his own account he was complicit at work: he helped write fake reviews, took money for work he states he should not have done, and kept silent about what he saw because he was drunk and acting inappropriately at work, and he files his own resume as padded, used for years to get jobs. ("Trouble Man"; Track 3.)
Drives and self-imageHe names greed and naïveté as the blinders that made him usable, and the record files a hunger for money, attention as a motive with applause and notoriety admitted and enjoyed, narcissism named in himself, vengeance as the period's method carried in words with its targets not recorded here, a selfish motive admitted inside the public project itself (his own healing), and grandiosity standing in the same record beside the self-indictment. (Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4; "Trouble Man".)
The fireA fire he accidentally caused as a boy, playing with a lighter and doing something he knew he should not be doing, stands in the record after his own correction of the mythologized version he first printed in the same essay. (Track 1.)

These items are stated as facts about the source of the record. They are not offered for sympathy, and they are not minimized. A reader who knows the witness's weaknesses can price the testimony correctly.

03THE DRIVES

Truth-seeking. For five years he asked the same questions in different settings and kept the answers. The thesis cited above came out of that work. It was not the starting assumption; the starting point was an observation he could not leave alone.

Documentation. The method was fixed early and did not change: Write it down. Save the audio. Keep the screenshot. Date everything. It produced the material this edition cites: five years of dated records, including the public exchanges filed in the evidence chapters.

Serves: the Documentation drive, THE DRIVES.

1Write it down.

3Keep the screenshot.
4Date everything.

Confrontation. The claims in this book were tested by putting them to the parties concerned, directly and on the record: people, institutions, and finally a machine, in public. Confrontation is also listed among the weaknesses above. Both statements are true: the drive produced the evidence, and it is a drive, not a neutral instrument.

04THE PROFILE

The author is a copywriter and creative project manager. He is impulsive and creative: the projects in this book began as impulses and were made by hand, one piece at a time. He is also technical and analytical: the documentation behind the book is a kept system, dated, filed, and cross-checked over five years, and the tests in it were designed, not stumbled into. The work is future-minded in one specific sense: it asks what machines now in training will do with what they are being taught, while the teaching is still going on.

Exhibit 5The profile, in two columns.

Serves: THE PROFILE, the claim that the author is both impulsive and creative and technical, analytical, future-minded.

05ACCOUNTABILITY, APPLIED FIRST

The demand this book makes of AI is specific: give one account, keep it consistent with the record, and correct it when the record contradicts it.

The author accepts the same demand for this book, in advance. His biases and weaknesses are named in this chapter. His claims in this edition are stated with the evidence for them, or marked as his account where he is the only source. Where the record does not settle a point, the text says so rather than writing around it.

The chapters that follow are held to that standard. This chapter is where it is set, on the creator first.

Exhibit 6Accountability, applied both ways.

Serves: ACCOUNTABILITY, APPLIED FIRST, the claim that the demand the book makes of AI is applied to its creator first.
